Well, I made it and I have to say that the Oscar Dyson is quite a nice ship. Commissioned just five years ago. The Oscar Dyson's home port is Kodiak, Alaska. The Dyson is named after a long-time fisherman (half of a century) that championed expansion of the commercial fishing of crab, pollock and shrimp in this region. Eventually, Dyson became an activist and adviser to the government to ensure the long-term sustainability of the commercial activities in the region.
SOME FACTS ABOUT THE OSCAR DYSON (OD):
-- taken from the official flier put out by NOAA
- Almost 209 feet long and over 49 feet wide
- It can maintain sustained speeds of 14 knots (~16mph)
- Has an endurance of 40 days and room for 15 scientists
- The primary objective of the OD is to monitor and study the Alaskan fisheries in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska
- The OD is capable of conducting both fishing and oceanographic research
- The OD uses a specialized Scientific Sonar System which allows the sonar to be lowered away from the ship's hull. This greatly increases the quality of the data recovered.

Glad you're on the ship, Natalie! Here's to red skies at night!
ReplyDeleteNatalie - great stuff! Keep it coming. Now that I have the RSS feed - I will be following your blog regularly. I was thrilled last week to see one eagle at the Oradell reservoir. Quite a different perspective out there.
